Watermelon

Nothing beats a slice of Milne Bay watermelon on a warm day. They are juicy and Oh, So Sweet ! You can buy them whole or sometimes served just like this as smaller slices. Watermellon, Alotau Market

Watermellon, Alotau Market

A more unusual variety I found was colored orange inside. The taste was virtually the same though.

Coconuts

I don't know why, but coconuts here in Milne Bay taste better than any coconut I have eaten anywhere else in the world. They are sold at the market already husked and you can either cut the remaining 'top' off, or simply bend it and it breaks away. The juice inside is cool and sweet and when the coconut is young and for drinking like these, the juice is actually effervescent, like lemonade !

Pineapples

There always seems to be pinapples for sale at the market and they are incredibly sweet. Some pinaples from supermarkets in Australia are sweet with a sligthly bitter after tatse. These guys though are sweet and juicy right the way through.

Star fruit (Locally called 'Five Corner')

Chestnuts, Alotau Market Star fruit are eaten pretty much like an apple. They can taste sweet or less sweet depending on the tree they have come from with a kind of citrus flavour. Sometimes they are sliced so each slice looks like a star, and sometimes the sharp edges are sliced away as they can be a litle bitter.
