Peanuts, Alotau MarketPeanuts

Peanuts are grown around most villages in small plots and sold in fresh bunches. They are not dried, shelled or cooked and retain a rich flavour that becomes adictive fast !

Lau Lau

Lau Lau are a small bitter/sweet fruit with a texture much like an apple. They have a slight flour like fragrance to them as well. They are eaten in the same way as an apple is eaten. Just grab one and crunch into it !

Curry Nuts

This is one of our personal favourites. Curry nuts taste nothing at all like curry. In fact I have no idea why they are called this. They are basically a seed inside quite a large fibrous shell. It takes quite some belting with a rock to get into one, and once you do, you are rewarded with a small nut. It's worth the effort though ! They are generally bought threaded on a bush skewer or string and slid off one by one to eat.

Chestnuts

Chestnuts, Alotau Market Another one of my favourites are what is referred to locally as chestnuts. They have no resemblance to the english style chestnut so, again, I don't know why. They are however, deliscous and very filling. Each chestnut would fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. I have had them poached in coconut cream and they're just fantastic. I'm sure there are many more ways to cook them too.
