The most common of all vegetables served in the region is Yams and Sweet Potatoes. These two simple vegetables make it into almost every single meal cooked in a wide range of methods. They are commonly boiled in a coconut cream and served with Ibeka (A kind of green spinach like vegetable). You'll also find Onion, Garlic, Taro and Tapioc here as well. On rare occasions you'll also find english potatoes (The kind we commonly eat in Australia). They are not grown locally, but transported from village farms in the PNG highlands. |
There are commonly 3 types of greens available daily at the Alotau Market. Ibeka (Which is a leafy green much like spinach), Green Beans (These are really long!) and sometimes the leaves from a special type of fern tree. |

At almost every market day, there are small tomatoes. There's a few different varities of these from simple dwarf sized tomatoes to the tiny button type tomatoes known as 'tom thumbs'. These a always juicy and very popular in all sorts of local dishes. |
