Masurina Lodge, Alotau One of the nicest lodge type accommodation in Milne Bay is the Masurina Lodge in Alotau. Located very close to the center of town, but above the township on the hillside, it enjoys cool afternoon sea breezes. It's a very tastefully decorated lodge with little resemblance to a pretensious hotel of the regular tourist haunts in other countries. As tourism is still in it's infancy here, the lodge reflects this and caters mostly for locals who are part of conferences or here on business. The lodge has a very tasteful restaurant which is popular with the local business people on a friday night. They call this night, family night, and it's just that. The kids play in the pool or on the adventure set, while the parents enjoy a social and friendly atmosphere. Family night is a buffet style meal with a bar and usually a raffle or two. We stay in various forms of accommodation here, depending on availabilty as Alotau sometimes has not enough accommodation to go around of this type. The pictures on this page are from the Family Units which are our first choice when we can get them which is most of the time. They consist of 2 lockable rooms a shared bathroom with hot and cold shower and toilet and also a comfortable lounge room and kitchen with an adjoining outdoor balcony.
The Masurina Lodge is owned and managed by the Abel family, who have a lengthy history in the area dating back to the early 1900's when they were the first to set up christian missions in Kwato Island near Samurai. Charles Abel is now the Federal Tourism Minister. |
