Papua New Guinea guided tour

What do we eat ?

Meals vary depending on availability at the time. When staying in Hotel style accommodation in Alotau, we are treated to beautifully prepared meals that take a western style and blend it perfectly with traditional foods, but for the most part, we are truly eating off the land. Our food is all caught or harvested daily and cooked using traditional recipes and techniques over open fires.

One of the things likely to make it into almost every meal is rice. This simple staple food has a million local recipes and the locally grown rice is just perfect with seafood.

Dinners and Lunches
Fish and seafood make a large part of the diet of the locals and for us it is no different. If you're vegetarian, don't worry, we cater for you too ! Vegetables, especially root vegetables are plentiful and are also served along with most meals. Fresh coconut juice is available all day served and drunk fresh from the nut. Papua New Guinea is famous for it's amazing coconuts and a young coconut is actually effervescent with bubbles, just like a soft drink. Coconut flesh and cream is often used in recipes.

Fish and many different types of shell fish including giant clam are often baked directly on coals on the fire, although sometimes they are stewed with coconut.

We commonly eat the following..Fish for the Beach BBQ

We occasionaly get.

  • Turtle
  • Bat
  • Shark

Breakfast
We make our own island breads and traditional cakes over the fire and these are often served around breakfast time along with any localy available fish, rice or fruits.

Tea and Coffee
Tea and coffee is something we know some of you can't go without, so we carry this with the team and they're available regularly throughout the day. We also carry some softdrinks with us.

Alcohol
It is possible to carry a small amount of beer, wine or liquor purchased locally in Alotau with us during the trip, but alcohol plays a very small part in our adventure and you might prefer to go a few days without and enjoy a beer at the start and end of the adventure in Alatou.

Bear in mind, that we have no way of making your beer or wine cold ! We don't have refrigeration available, so any beer or wine needs to be best enjoyed at room temperature.
